Instructions
to patients receiving immediate dentures
A
great deal of care and skill has been used in the production of the denture(s)
that you have received. To enable you to learn to use the dentures as quickly as
possible and get the greatest benefit from them you are asked to note the
following advice:
Immediately
following removal of teeth and insertion of the dentures.
(1)
Do not remove the dentures yourself. Your dentist will remove them at
your next appointment.
(2)
If pain occurs relief may be obtained by taking Ibuprofen (eg. Neurofen)
or Aspirin.
(3)
Eat only soft foods at this stage and rinse the mouth lightly after
meals.
Next
Appointment.
This appointment will normally be arranged about twenty-four hours
following the extractions. Your dentures will be removed and any treatment
necessary to improve your comfort will be carried out. You will be shown how to
remove and replace the dentures.
Home
Care.
(1)
Eating may be difficult at first. Cut your food into small pieces, and
take your time chewing. Avoid tough and sticky foods over the learning period.
(2) Remove your dentures and
clean them after each meal. A soft brush with soap and cold water
are satisfactory for cleaning. Alternatively, a proprietary denture
cleanser may be used,
following the manufacturers' instructions. Rinse the mouth thoroughly
with warm water before replacing the dentures.
(3) For the first week wear the
dentures both night and day, removing them only for cleaning. After a week wear
them only during the day, storing them in cold water at night to prevent them
from drying out and warping.
(4)
Pain and soreness sometimes occurs with new dentures. Adjustments may be
required. If the pain is severe, leave the
dentures out and arrange an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Do not attempt to adjust the denture yourself.
(5)
Your dentures will become progressively looser as time goes by because of
changes taking place in your mouth as
healing proceeds. Your dentist will advise when the time has come for
the dentures to be relined or remade to restore their fit. This counts as
another course of treatment and you will need to pay the charges incurred.
